Victor de Souza Fashion Event to benefit University Settlement

On Thursday, October 23, the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center for the Arts was transformed into a red-carpeted Moulin Rouge at the University Settlement's annual Autumn Gala. Argentine designer, Victor de Souza, who has made his home on New York's Lower East Side, presented a special collection that was showcased in this exciting cabaret setting. Models glided along the runway, amidst a shower of white feathers, creating a stunning tableau vivant evocative of the Paris of Mistinguette, Josephine Baker, and Edith Piaf.

With live music, live and silent auctions supervised by Christie's, and the Food Network's Aarón Sanchez, author of La Comida del Barrio: Latin American Cooking in the USA, spearheading the event's culinary fare, this evening was easily dubbed "Can-Can con Salsa"!

In addition, the Honorable Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, was presented with the Charles B. Stover Award. Speaker Silver, a longtime resident of the Lower East Side, has been a tireless advocate and supporter for the community and for University Settlement. Gail B. Nayowith, Executive Director of the Citizens' Committee for Children of New York, Inc. presented the award.
